At AI Day 2022 a development prototype walked on stage untethered and waved; a sleeker Optimus prototype was shown but did not walk.
2023

Tesla published a lab update showing several units walking, plus object handling and torque-controlled actuators.

A video showed a unit sorting coloured blocks with a neural network trained end to end, then holding yoga poses.

Gen 2 arrived with Tesla-designed actuators, new 11-DoF hands with tactile sensing on every finger, an actuated neck, 10 kg less mass and 30% faster walking.

Optimus units mingled with guests and served drinks at the Cybercab event. Several outlets later reported the interactions were human-assisted.

Tesla posted the next-generation hand catching a tossed ball, shown under teleoperation.
2025
Shareholders approved a CEO award with an operational milestone of one million cumulative bot deliveries.
2026

Tesla said S and X production would wind down so the Fremont space could become an Optimus factory, with a long-term goal of a million robots a year.
On the Q1 call Musk put Fremont production at late July or August, warned output would be slow, and moved the Gen 3 reveal to around mid-year.
Tesla said the S and X lines were decommissioned and first-generation Optimus lines were being installed; first builds go to an internal Optimus Academy.
· Unconfirmed
A paywalled report said output reached several hundred a week in August, with hands still the bottleneck. Tesla has not confirmed the figure.
At X Takeover, Musk said magnet export curbs cost the programme two to three months and that the hands remain the hardest part.
